Laura Tabet

“Portrait of Curiosity” illuminates the passions and intimate musings of one fabulous woman of substance. In our nineteenth instalment, we talk to London-based Creative Director Laura Tabet.

A French-Lebanese Creative Director, Laura Tabet’s versatile roster of clients – from luxury fashion to activewear – speaks to both her elevated storytelling of brand identities and the craft of simple yet visually stunning campaigns. She is the founder of Beirut Re-Store, a charitable marketplace which, in the wake of the city’s devastating 2020 blast, recruited over 200 artists to donate art, photography and design objects to raise funds. A champion of emerging creativity, she has curated publications such as True Photo Journal and currently directs the design of Unemployed Magazine, an independent publication showcasing the work of burgeoning creative talent.

01 THE IDEA BEHIND OUR DEVE "CARTE BLANCHE" SERIES WAS

necessity. It is both an exploration of the enchanting universe of Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne – objects rich in symbolism – and a celebration of the enduring legacy of family, trust, love and generational connections.

02 THE DESIGN THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR ME

my 2015 pilgrimage to Donald Judd’s Chinati Foundation* in Marfa, West Texas. It blew my mind.

03 AN EXPERIENCE THAT DEFINED ME

Creating Beirut Re–Store, a charitable marketplace that raised funds for Beirut in the wake of the 2020 blast. Photography, painting, sculpture, jewellery, publications, apparel, and ceramics — were generously donated by artists from across the creative industries to help the Lebanese people rebuild my dear motherland.

04 THE OBJECT I WILL NEVER PART WITH

a black and white portrait of my grandmother Jacqueline*, photographed by my grandfather in the 60s.

*Pictured here.

05 I WAS MOST RECENTLY INSPIRED BY

the constellation of incredible women in my life who emerged to support me when my son Luca was born this year.

06 ART I WISH I HAD CREATED

Imagine how much fun it must have been to dream up Lalanne’s fauna and flora-inspired functional sculptures. A bronze hippo bathtub, a six-foot-long grasshopper bar, sheep stools, a toad-shaped armchair…

07 SOMETHING THAT ALWAYS BRINGS ME JOY

Unemployed magazine: a publication that I work on with my sister.

08 SOMEONE I'VE DISCOVERED RECENTLY

British artist Sahara Longe. I’m looking forward to her forthcoming solo exhibition at Timothy Taylor Gallery.
