Ciello Tuazon

“Portrait of Curiosity” illuminates the passions and intimate musings of one fabulous woman of substance. In our eigth instalment, we talk to NYC-based beauty product developer Ciello Tuazon.

Ciello Tuazon’s personal style reads just like her approach to skincare: comfort-forward, uncomplicated and intuitive. Her job – Director of Product and Product Innovation and Development at Malin+Goetz – is, ultimately, one of storytelling. Through creative formulations of botanical skincare and fragrances, she crafts experiences that nourish the face, body and soul. It’s a passion that stems from her grandmother, from whom she learned the importance of oils as early as brushing her teeth, and a lifelong appreciation of skincare as an emotional and meditative experience.

01 THE REASON I GOT INTO PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT IS

I love creating experiences. Regardless of the platform. From a moisturiser to a fragrance to a candle - designing objects that shape our daily life and our sense of well-being..

02 THE PART I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY JOB IS

the challenge of creating something useful, innovative and considered.

03 THE PRODUCT I'VE CREATED THAT I AM MOST PROUD OF IS

my latest work for Malin+Goetz’s Strawberry eau de parfum. I love turning seemingly simple concepts on their head, reimagining something to create curiosity and conversation. Strawberry scents instantly invoke a sense of something juvenile. The perfume was created as an ode to naturality and the molecular facets of this garden fruit.

04 MY SECRET INGREDIENT IS

encapsulation. Which is the process of entrapping active ingredients within a liposome. (Think of it like a bubble!) It’s great for improving the delivery of bioactive molecules and protecting potent ingredients.

05 THE PROCESS I FIND THE MOST REWARDING IS

when we finally produce and scale a formula for a product. The process of initially researching and developing a concept to bringing the final formula to life can take up to two to three years!

06 A CREATIVE WHOSE WORK I NEVER TIRE OF IS

Dieter rams. His work is prolific and he was ahead of his time. I often reference his principles in my work.

07 THE BEST SKINCARE ADVICE I'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS

to do less. Use less and take probiotics. Your gut is connected to everything.

08 AN ARTIST WHOSE WORK I'VE RECENTLY DISCOVERED IS

CIELLO'S FAVOURITE THINGS

01 Josef Albers's book "Interaction of color": was her most recent inspiration.

02 The Non-conformist hoops in gold vermeil.

03 Malin + Goetz meadowfoam oil balm.

*She loves having a multipurpose product that she can use on her face, body, hair and is aromatically soothing.

04 The restaurant "Nura" in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

05 The Marmar table by Orior furniture: the homeware item she's longing for.
